And to think… that our Minister of Public Works Ghazi Aridi answered ‘Right’ to the above! *Facepalm* If I were in charge I’d sentence him to a couple of hours of ‘Torture by traffic‘. Because of his decision, it took me 90 minutes to cross a road that would otherwise take 15 minutes. For more info check out Blog Baladi‘s comment on this.

But anyway, here’s a sweeter tone on the ears. Enjoy and have a beautiful day! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sorry Maya you were stuck in that traffic, but that was funny! A fashion show on Lebanon’s already congested roads.

      Dear “world designers”,
what does your name mean anyway? you meant “world’s designers” but was so angry to write it the right way? and how exactly do you represent all the designers of the world?

Let me give you some advices:
1- When on PMS, Shut up!
2- When you hate someone for being more popular, also shut up. You will look and sound so stupid (and so damn funny) when you talk.
3- When you feel you can’t shut up, go and draw a lame illustration or something, and tell yourself that you are a genius but the world is not ready for it and people do not understand your genius.
4- Go meet other lame friends, listen to some lame underground music, and talk about each others lame work how it is so great.
5- Manage to have some anal sex. On emergencies, design a lame serif-font or something, print it on none-glossy a3 paper, roll it up, and shove it up your ass.

And next time, please, use your real name when you write a comment, and put a link to your work. Mish 7ayala sha2fit designer feshil baddo yijeh yitfalsaf bil comment box, ma3lesh!!

OK, apart from my immatur comment!
What I think can be summarized by:
        (1) Maya’s blog is very creative and innovative… Her posts converge to what the Lebanese people’s thoughts, attitudes and hopes.
        (2) Her pictures are, too, creative, okay, granted that she picked a style for drawing and posting on THIS blog, which is cogent with the whole concept of a BLOG! Enno if you’re gonna post a MONA LISA like this wouldn’t be a blog, would it?
        (3) Time is a key factor, this is in consistency with what has preceeded, simple pictures, direct to the point… This would save precious time dedicated primarily for her JOB!

Finally, thank you Maya! I, for one, am very picky. But I have come to find in your blog, pictures and the mere style you present your stories by
very fulfilling! Thank you again, for your posts, besides putting a smile onto our faces, have directed out eyes to serious issues all over Lebanon, our country.
Sorry, I haven’t revised this for grammar and spelling, but hey, otherwise, it would seem as an affectation ๐Ÿ˜€

    Dear Maya,

I saw you give a presentation about creative commons at GeekFest. While your work is not necessarily bad, and I admit you have distinguished style, I do agree with WORLD DESIGNERS that you’re over-rated as I’ve seen much more talented Lebanese designers less known than you are, though I wouldn’t exactly use her words to express it.

I understand WORLD DESIGNERS’ frustration, and so should you. Sorry if my opinion is too honest. I’m always willing to re-asses.

Maya’s simple illustration and style on her blog/books are the medium she chose to use in order to illustrate her stories – which all her fans and readers relate to, hence allowing her to succeed.

Design based comments and critics here, not matter how “constructive” they pretend to be, are simply out of place because Maya is not competing at a design competition nor does she have the pretension to present the most complex or most beautiful illustrations one can do – or even she could do.

Her style and illustration on her blog/books are a choice. Obviously, this choice can’t appeal to everyone and some people – obviously like yourself or Sabine aka World Designers – might find it ugly or banal.

My point is that her design and illustration skills can in no way be judged nor criticized based on this blog, for this is the style she chose to adopt – and does not represent the extent of her technical skills.

If that style does not appeal to some people, then I am sorry to agree with Maya, but these people don’t have anything to do on this blog; and this is in no way “not accepting feedback and criticism”. You can’t ask Maya for “better” drawings because this is not about better or worse. It’s about a certain style, again and again.

In regards of her success being “overrated”: this simply doesn’t mean anything to me. Her success can’t be over rated because she was not imposed on people: it’s the reaction of the people that made her a successful blogger when she wasn’t even expecting it nor did she have any aspirations for it. Can you help it? Even she couldn’t.

When something appeals to people, it becomes successful. If it doesn’t appeal to you nor are you able to understand why does this thing appeal to others is a different story. You can call these people idiots, accuse them of ignorance maybe, or lack of taste, whatever.

But in my very humble opinion, everyone of us should live and let live and do the best they can at what they do. If I were a designer myself and didn’t like the work of someone who seemed to be successful, I simply would look away and focus on my own career and try to be as successful as I can.

If I, as a musician, don’t like nor do I understand the success of a band like Coldplay for example, I simply have nothing to gain by confronting them, hating on them, or blaming them for my own failure. Instead, I’d look at myself in the mirror and wonder why my own music doesn’t manage to be as successful, and work on it.

Peace on you and everyone you love,

      R

        Thanks for that.

I wasn’t really blaming Maya or anyone for that matter, I was just frustrated with the fact that Maya is on the front of the Lebanese designer front not because of the quality of her designs, but for her very active presence on the web and in the blogosphere.

I think you’re assuming that popularity is always a fair vote from “the people”. It’s not. There are too many influences involved. Maya markets herself and her work very well, and that earned her a lot of popularity. Hands down to that.

Anyway, I don’t want to get carried away. As you said, criticizing Maya on her blog is like taking a dump on someone’s doorstep, it’s not nice. My remarks are not personal.

    Dear Maya,

I guess World Designers broke the silence with her comment.
I think your illustrations -although first of a kind, and were received with all the joy- trigger nothing in case of technique or concept, nor do they contribute to the design/illustration scene in any way. So do the topics you handle, they’re crafted in a very simple/first draft way, more like a drawing diary. Maybe its time to take it up to the next level.. no ?!

Its good to see the book of a Lebanese designer in the Top 5 at virgin, but frankly i’d expect to see a book of a designer actually investing more time on the concepts and illustrations…taking his/her audience more seriously.

    cheers

      Dear Sam,
If you are looking for technique, yaba ino leik malla technique w ni7na jaggileh, go and check some experimental design blogs (you know the ones nobody visits but other lame experimental designers).

It never was and never will be about how complexe the technique is. In fact, it works in the opposite way! world’s most popular comic artists, like “XKCD” and “cyanide and happiness” use stick figures! Other equally popular artists use the same strip everyday and they only change the text (http://www.qwantz.com) .

Having said that, I think Maya’s technique is so unique and a work of GENIUS! It is so simple, so joyful, so rich, and so unique, yet so hard to produce!

So dear sam, the next time you criticize someone’s work for being too simple remember that it is really hard to ship simple products, and that’s exactly why people ADORE Maya’s work. And if you think Maya’s work is not good enough, and you wish to have another book in the top 5, then great, farjina 2ouwtik, write a book, and let’s see if u can sell more than 5 copies.

        Dear TY

I wasn’t aware this was the “most-devoted-fan with smartest reply” contest. Had i known , i would have copied and pasted another “Wow, great work” comment from above.

But since Maya knows that remarkable work is not achieved just with applause, she’s allowing these comments, and that’s -unlike your reply-, very professional of her and is much appreciated.

I’d like to thank you TY for enlightening me on Experimental Design, and since u do know of it, you should be aware that involves constant “experimentation, improvement, innovations….etc.” hence ..its name. If that’s not the case it will turn into monotonous, very predictable piece of work, which might happen with our friend here, in case she disregarded the not-so-expected comments. And since your such a devoted fan, u should be equally interested in noting the weak points, rather than just applauding with the crowd !

The fact that you mentioned “Cyanide and Happiness” proves my point that Maya’s comics could improve from mere Narrating of an incident she had, to something actually funny with an unpredictable ending, through short and witty comics..

Finally, Dear TY, read a comment thoroughly before you rush into conclusions, some comments are meant to shed light on some points that get lost among the applauding crowd of devoted fans.

PS: good to know that commenting on blogs is a new tejgeel tool :), i shall do it more often..
