Three, what’s up with the “FOSHA” in ELLE mag? Not that I read or am planning to read the magazine, but why not use the Lebanese, Dubai and Egyptian dialects? Makes it more original… Well after all you know better.

BX , ليس من السيء التفكير قبل القيام بالتعبير عن رأيك, خاصة و إن كان ما تكتبه يتضمن نوع من التحقير.
- اللغة الانجليزية و كما هو معروف لدى الجميع هي لغة التجارة العالمية وبالتالي فإنهـا تسمح للمنظم وإن رغب بذلك بتوسيع حضوره إلى حضور يتسم بصفة عالمية. و لو راجعت الصفحة الأولى من الموقع بدل من صرف الوقت على السخر التافه, لكنت لحظت أن هذا هو تماما ما اراده المنظمون.
- إن عدد من الافكار التي تعنى بهذا الموضوع أفكار حديثة ليس لدا بعضها مصطلحات عربية موازية لها.
- لو كان العرب روادا في هذا الموضوع أو غيره لكنا فهمنا سبب الاستياء, ولكن عندما تقوم باستيراد أفكار ومصطلحات من الغرب فلا يفيدك شيء التنكر بالوطنية فجأة…. نسمي هذا النوع من التصرف” شحاد ومشارط” باللغة العامية اللبنانية….

It is that exact mentality that we Arabs have, that made us behind the rest of the world. We have to be open and accept everyone in the outer world whatever region, culture, religion, and language. We, and especially people of the Middle East have always been the center of communication, and the meeting of people coming from different areas of the world, ever since the Phoenicians. So don’t come over here to express your radical closed-minded anger over a cause we all think about, but needs time and planning. The Israelis have the largest startups development rate, and they own some of the largest internet companies in the world, yet, there websites are not hebrew. These websites are meant to deliver a message to as many people as possible, and English is now the leading worldwide language.

لمّا تحكي عن كون الإنكليزي لغة التجارة العالمية بكون صحيح لمّا التجارة عم بتمّ ضمن دول العالم، بس لمّا تكون تجارة بينية بين دول بيحكو ذات اللغة، فلغة التجارة بتصير بهالحالة لغة المجموعة المعنية.
القصة مش قصة مصطلحات، القصة قصة ثقافة، ولو كل واحد بيفهم ثقافته ما كان صار هالتأخير بإيجاد المصطلحات المناسبة.
وكمان تعقيبا عحجة المصطلحات، مش غلط كتابتهم معرّبين متل لمّا تكتب كلمة عربي بالاحرف اللاتينية، كمان العالم لح تستوعب لمّا تكتب المصطلح الأجنبي بالاحرف العربية.

Okay friend you’re starting to include things non has referred to in this debate, namely hebrew. Another thing, we are not phoenicians, stop holding on to this! Well maybe some lebanese and syrians are, but back off a bit. It’s starting to get very shabby to shove the claim of our “phoenicianity” or whatever in every word or dispute… An Arab blog must have some decent space for Arabic. It reminds me of the ad: “Americana, arabiah miah bel miah!”. I mean I’m not against English, I particularily love it, but cut Arabic, our dear language, nay, our mother language some slack here!
Well, you can’t inject Arabic content where it does not fit best, and where there is low Arab penetration. We need to have a determination to reconstruct the Arab definitions of technology. The Arab world has been obviously absent in the last couple of centuries where major inventions were created, and you can’t just forget all these stages were we had no 1% of presence. We need planning. We need to set checkpoints to reach our goal.
The language to use depends on your targeted audience. If you just want to target Arabic spealing people, then use Arabic. If you want to target all Lebanese, you’ll have to use english. I’m Lebanese and can barely read Arabic, that doesn’t make me less Arab than anyone else. And don’t forget that we are only 4 million lebanese in lebanon while in Brazil alone there are 15 million. If you want to target these lebanese too, you can’t use Arabic.
Away from the Hebrew/Phoenicians discussion!
Usually, from UX point of view, web designers/developers should take under consideration what audience they’re targeting. In this case, it’s IT/business oriented people, who mainly use English more than Arabic as a way of online communication.
