Yes my darlings. I kid you not. The photographer consciously asked me to “act coy” or “etdalla3 – اتدلّع” in order for the image to turn out ‘beautiful’. When he saw I was reluctant, he asked for “all the dala3 of the world!”. Do I look like someone who would act all cute and coquette for a formal passport photo? HE’S WRONG! I should have known anyway from the photo samples he proudly displayed at the entrance of the studio…

Anyway, what better to start your week with than Brad Mehldau’s genius?

Here’s his piano interpretation of The Beatles’ Blackbird.

I took my own passport photos. Stand in front of a blank wall, set the camera on self timer and smile. I printed my photos and then cut them out. Much easier AND cheaper.

I guess passport with such images make it alot more easier to board a plane or a reason?

This is my first time hearing of make-up fix-up at a passport photo-shoot. And asking you to be coy for the sake of the picture bezzyeddeh? This is definitely a first for me. Where I stay, they don’t care if you’re crying or have a blue “eye patch”. They make u look like you have a blue “eye patch” [AKA make you look horrible] most of the time anyway, lol.

    Interesting !

At least we have got a self-sustaining system of values that is not mistaken about how women should portray themselves. What is the use of a passport photo that actually looks like you, anyway? :)

  12. Mariam

It is definitely my first time hearing of a photographer “forcefully” offering a make-up fix-up and further asking the “photographee” to be coy? LOL

Where I stay, they don’t care whether you’re smiling or crying. And they end up making you look like you just came out of a fight most of the times. lol

  13. ritamou

he actually had a make up kit? and seriously put some one you?! walla… 3am nettawar… :S
i hate passport photos! i’ve had the same one since i was in Brevet… apparently my face didnt change tht much ^^

It’s the same here in Cairo; I always feel a knot of tension in my stomach when I see that the guy taking my picture is dressed up like he’s covering a war for Magnum.

Oh, and this is the first time I’ve read your blog. I know I’ll be back.

  16. mc

I had the same expressions on the pictures on my wedding day :) ))

Reminds me of a similar experience, except in my case the makeup was digital. After the guy took my photo, and before printing, he insisted on going over it in Photoshop and erasing every hint of a bump or pore until my face looked like a wax mask. Oh yes, very masculine! I never used those passport photos.

  18. suneela

hehe did he ask you to titghannaji as well. YUCK!

  19. Ivy

You can create own passport photo at home.
The http://idphoto4you.com website can create valid passport photo from your raw photo.
    This site is free.

  21. suzan

yeah..I had the same experience (probably at the same place).. He told me to “itghannaj” lal camera.. He’s nice though.. in a creepy way-too-excited kind of way.. but hey it’s a lot better than other photo places.. i looked like a DOG in my passport for 3 years because the camera guy was too cool to wait for my smile.

Hilarious! I have a cousin who was so good at playing coy, she initially went in for a passport photo and got out with a full-on photo-shoot. The photographer put up her pic on the vitrine of his store. She would drive around his store daily just to make sure it was still there. So do you really blame him, he was simply giving you the opportunity to model. If only you were more cooperative Maya ;)
